Wiki Gnomes are users who focus on taking care of the wiki by handling the little things. See
Wiki Gnome on Ward's Wiki.
You too can be a wiki gnome! The general nature of the gnome is to clean the wiki up in tiny, incremental ways. As such, a lot of a gnome's work is dedicated to making sure wikis are well-linked, styled all pretty-like, and generally cleaned up.
Gnome Tools
-
Recent Changes — Gnomes read other people's edits and watch for edit or revert wars.
-
Outgoing Links — Gnomes try to add links to pages that don't have any links to other pages on the wiki.
-
Orphaned Pages — Gnomes try to find places to link to a page that doesn't have any links to it.
-
Wanted Pages — Sometimes Gnomes will go looking for pages that are linked from other places that don't yet exist. Sometimes they unlink the links on the requesting pages, other times they point the link at a page that does exist, and still other times they create the wanted page.
-
Help — Offering help to those who need it.
Gnomes can do a lot as individuals, but when two or more gnomes work together they are more powerful. Sometimes they communicate about their actions offline (off wiki) and sometimes online. To do this requires balancing a drive to action with a respect for the value of consultation.
