a Discussion about Outreach
What are some good ways to engage in outreach and what is the best way to nurture a new editor along?

The Sacramento Wiki is brand new and very much incomplete. For those of you from Sacramento or have an interest in the city of Sacramento this is a great opportunity to edit historical and current information on Sacramento society. I can teach you how to link, code, edit, and bring an army of editors to the Sacramento Wiki. As editors you will be able to have the first editorial judgements on newly formed pages which will have impacts for years to come. People will see your edits whenever they want to know more about Sacramento. I, and some other Davis Wiki veterans will be holding events during the Fall Quarter to teach those who wish to become involved in Wiki editing. We might be able to give prizes away to those who are the most improved. So, invite your friends if you think they would be interested. We need people who like to take quality pictures of buildings, people, and other objects in Sacramento. We also need people who know specific information about various things in Sacramento.
There are existing training materials on line
Help. Maybe Steve can point out places in that material for improvement based on what he is proposing to teach in his training?

2007-09-14 01:58:26 Steve I think one of things I'm most concerned about it the language on your
blog about excluding people from the training. Banning aside the wiki is not supposed to be exclusionary in nature, but rather inclusive. If you are concerned about interacting with those groups maybe it would be a good idea to make the call for "other Davis Wiki veterans" to join you in your efforts a more open call. —JasonAller
2007-09-14 04:17:12 1. I don't need to train those who are already familar with the Davis Wiki system, they would be more disruptive than helpful if they were to attend or participate. 2. ASUCD, is a sick mess and I don't trust LEAD Davis Wiki editors in anyway. If they could they would ruin my outreach and attempt to destroy the goals I have set out to do. 3. The Davis Wiki veterans I speak of are people I truly trust, not the mudslingers and attack dogs that are commonly found on the Davis Wiki. 4. I do not claim to own the Davis Wiki nor do I claim to make this an official Davis Wiki event. This is simply my own agenda, my own thing, and the rules will be as such. This is to protect myself, the newly trained editors, and to be frank the system itself. I would be happy to respond to any questions or comments. —SteveOstrowski

2007-09-14 05:57:00 I'm a little concerned about people with no serious tie to Sacramento editing it's wiki. I discussed this with Steve briefly - in regards to his motivation to start editing SacWiki. I'd love to see more edits and content, but it has to be for the right reasons. It's great when someone from Davis crosses the causeway to eat at a great restaurant and takes the time to write about it on SacWiki. But please don't train a bunch of people to edit our wiki if they don't care about Sacramento. —CharlesMcLaughlin
2007-09-14 06:03:20 Many people at UC Davis are students from outside Davis and indeed many of them are freshmen. They will only edit if they actually care about Sacramento. I will also add that their primary function will probably be the Davis Wiki, but it's up to them, sort of. —SteveOstrowski
